Mama Shelter Roma occupies a pair of outwardly modest tower blocks. Step inside and – bang! – it’s an explosion of very chic, retro-themed, vividly coloured Italian flair. Designer Benjamin El Doghaïli dials it up to 11 with the hotel’s eclectic style - cartoon goddesses on the ceilings, emperors and pizzas woven into the carpet, and footballers’ mugshots on the walls. There are DJs, table football, photobooths, vintage arcade games, and pinball machines at every turn. And, somehow, it all makes sense. You can’t help but be charmed by Mama Shelter’s cheeky, OTT atmosphere.

While the hotel undoubtedly serves up a feast for the eyes, the belly is equally well-indulged - this is Italy, after all. The ground-floor pizza oven delivers pizza as good as any you’ll find anywhere else in the city, while pastas are deliciously inventive - the chitarrine with yellow datterino cream, tuna tartare and bread crumbs with squid ink is a particular triumph. Sleep it all off in your room - the beds are famously comfortable.
