Mama Shelter Bordeaux
Bordeaux
Elegant yet bold, with plenty of quirky touches that will ensure your stay is a memorable one.
For Mama Shelter Bordeaux, French designer Philippe Starck has taken hold of a nondescript building in one of France’s most prestigious wine-making areas and made it burst with colour. Starck’s unique design isn’t easily explained – Mama’s major elements include hundreds of pool floats, cartoon masks, and painted calligraphy all over the walls and ceilings. It all works – it’s even elegant – but you’ll have to see it for yourself.
The restaurant is the beating heart of the hotel. Informal. Excellent. Bustling. The menu offers a little bit of everything: Mama's coquillettes casserole; sesame tuna tataki; Caesar salad; duck fillet; Île flottante.
Mama’s best bit? The rooftop terrace. Take your meal up here with a side of marvellous views of the city.

Where you'll be
Downtown, Bordeaux
Mama Shelter is smack in the centre of Bordeaux, but on a peaceful square lined with trees. There’s a discreet shopping mall across the street; luxury shopping on the Cours de l’Intendance, and cafés on Place Gambetta are only a few minutes’ walk away. The shrine to wine, Cité du Vin, showcases the best of the region’s produce, as well as a comprehensive history of the sacred grape with plenty of tastings. In a former submarine base, Les Bassins de Lumières projects great works of art from masters such as Canaletto and Monet’s scenes of Venice across the walls and pools. More masters such as Picasso, Rubens, and Matisse can be viewed at the Musée des Beaux-Arts.
