Mama Shelter Belgrade is designed by Philippe Starck protégé, Jalil Amor, who worked on the original Mama Shelter in Paris. This is no reproduction, however. The visual approach is as riotous and whimsical as ever - public areas bursting with playful designs, colours, patterns, graffiti-covered ceilings, offbeat lighting, and even a wall of guitars - but the details are tailored to the setting, where Austria-Hungary meets the Balkans (look closely at the graffiti and you’ll see that it’s inspired by the meandering Danube).

Mama Shelter is, as usual, something of an entertainment district unto itself. The fourth-floor restaurant is a favourite hangout for locals as well as guests, as is the rooftop bar. Come for the bustle and off-beat style, stay for the delicious Serbian dishes, like Sarmice and grilled Ćevapi.
